N3 - BDA speaks out Dr. John Renshaw spoke out about concerns over Government proposals to reform NHS dentistry at the British Dental Association's annual conference in Bournemouth. He told Health Minister Rosie Winterton, "Assurances and action are needed on funding, on workforce and on how the new system is going to work." There are only 11 months to go before the biggest shake-up in dentistry for over half a century, as the Minister heard of the profession's frustration at the lack of detail about the proposals which will see Primary Care Trusts taking responsibility for commissioning local dental services for the first time. Dr Renshaw told the conference of over 3,000 delegates that the BDA's consultation of the profession revealed the extent of dentists' lack of certainty and confidence in the Government's proposals due to be introduced in April next year. "Our position has always been crystal clear. The BDA has long called for the outdated way NHS dentistry is organised, to be changed. We want to get dentists off the treadmill and give them time to give patients the quality of care they deserve and want." "But we have also been adamant that any new system must be properly tested and evaluated," said Dr Renshaw, who stressed the need for increased funding for dentistry and a speedy resolution to the current workforce crisis. Speaking after the Minister's address to conference, Dr Renshaw welcomed her acknowledgement of the profession's concerns over funding and the need for dentists to know which patients they will be responsible for under the new arrangements. In addition, he also welcomed the minister's recognition of dentists' concern over the timing of implementation and her commitment to considering this issue over the next few weeks. The steep learning curve faced by Primary Care Trusts would also be taken into account when looking at the timetable for reform, she said.
