If you are Practice owner operating within the NHS system, the new Clinical Attachments scheme (announced by the NHS) may be of benefit to you.

• Part qualified dentists (those who have passed the sitting of IQE Part A) will be recruited from India and placed in clinical attachment roles in the UK.

• They will be employed by PCT who will pay them approximately £14,000 gross per annum and apply for work permits on behalf of participants.

• They will be placed within a dental practice where they will observe and assist the practicing dentist in all aspects of patient care, for example by getting the appropriate instruments ready, mixing materials, ensuring patient comfort and taking notes for patient records. Depending on how the practice is run, they may also assist in making appointments, taking payments, and dealing with paperwork as part of gaining an understanding of how the practice functions.

• They will need to be allowed one or two days study leave per week.

• The PCT will pay their exam fees for IQE parts B and C.

• Once they have passed part C and registered with the GDC, they will be able to start work. If a full time post is not available in the practice in which they had originally been placed, the PCT will assist them in finding alternative posts.

• The Department of Health will invite PCTs to put forward appropriate practices where placements can be offered.
