M1 - On The First Day…. During a recent survey, when people were asked what the most daunting experience in their adult lives was, over 75% said one of them was the first day in a new job. For women, the main problem was what to wear, and for men – whether they would make a good impression on their boss or not. Many of those interviewed admitted they had made at least one big blunder, the most common being failing to recognize the person who had interviewed them! Employees can only work productively when they are happy and well settled, so it is vital to ensure that new employees are made to feel comfortable as quickly as possible. Here are some tips to make them feel at home: 1.On the first day of a new employee, encourage all of the staff to wear a nametag. There is nothing worse than asking the name of a member of staff, only to forget it due to nerves half an hour later! 2.Arrange a staff lunch on the first day of a new employee so that they can get to know everyone properly. 3.Assign a member of staff to "take care" of them on their first day. Their responsibilities could include showing them around, and helping them with any queries that they may have. |
